New Asiago Ice Rink
A sustainable, multi-purpose venue in the heart of Parco Millepini
The new Asiago Ice Arena
The new Asiago Ice Arena – a cutting-edge facility designed by Maffeis Engineering, in collaboration with sister Sidara company Dar as well as Pascoli Engineering and Pier Currà Architettura – has achieved a new milestone with the presentation of its complete feasibility study.
The arena will have a capacity of 3,250 seats and is designed to ensure maximum flexibility of use: in addition to professional and youth sports activities, it will be able to host cultural events, shows, trade fairs, and other public gatherings. The new facility will be located within Parco Millepini, at the heart of the new urban masterplan called “Asiago 365.”
The project includes two design options, both developed by Maffeis Engineering and the full design team, envisioning the construction of a partially underground sports arena. The aim is to minimise visual impact and enhance the dialogue with the surrounding landscape of the Asiago Plateau.
The architectural design draws inspiration from the natural contours of the environment, with a subtle and harmonious architectural language. The structure will appear as a light, green-integrated volume, featuring extensive glass surfaces and a green roof that blends into the terrain, enhancing continuity with the landscape. The arena is conceived as a “hidden pavilion”, balancing advanced technology with deep respect for its environmental context.
Surrounding the sports facility, the main infrastructures of the “Asiago 365” masterplan will take shape, transforming the Millepini area into a year-round, multifunctional hub. Planned features include a 5-star hotel with wellness centre , an open-air amphitheatre , a picnic area immersed in nature, and a network of paths and public spaces accessible to residents, athletes, and tourists alike.
In parallel, a new road network is being designed to improve access to the area and ease traffic congestion, especially during major events.
The entire project stands out for its adoption of environmental and energy sustainability criteria, both during construction and operation phases, with the goal of creating a low-impact, high-efficiency infrastructure.
The new ice arena represents a strategic investment for the Asiago Plateau, with an estimated value of approximately €25 million, funded through national, federal, and inter-municipal resources. The project aims to reposition Asiago as a leading destination for winter sports, tourism, and events, aligned with a vision of sustainable and year-round development.
Statements
Mario Lievore, President of Hockey Club Asiago:
“I am confident that we have a real chance of succeeding. This is only the first step in a journey that sees us working together with the Municipality for the benefit of Asiago hockey and its 400 athletes — from youth to juniors and seniors. It’s an activity that attracts sports schools, team training camps, and new, high-profile events.”
Roberto Rigoni Stern, Mayor of Asiago:
“I would like to thank Mario Lievore of Hockey Club Asiago for his commitment in engaging with engineer Massimo Maffeis, CEO of Maffeis Engineering Spa — one of Italy’s leading design firms. Together, we sought the best solution, particularly in terms of environmental integration, for a facility that will reshape Asiago’s economy and offer concrete opportunities to the many young people involved in ice sports. It will be a great challenge, but no costs will fall on Asiago’s citizens. The investment will be entirely covered by external funding sources, primarily the Border Municipalities Fund, and potentially regional, European, and national funds. It’s an ambitious effort, but we believe this facility represents the qualitative leap that has long been recognised as necessary — and that our territory deserves.”
Massimo Maffeis, Project Designer:
“The project involves the construction of a partially underground ice arena, designed in harmony with the natural topography of the site. The intervention will be carried out as part of the ‘Asiago 365’ masterplan, which is based on principles of environmental and social sustainability.
