This museum of modern and contemporary arts, designed by Shigeru Ban, is one of the new symbols of the contemporary architecture in Europe. With a surface area of 8,000 m², the roof structure is composed of over 16 kilometres of glued laminated timber, that intersects to form hexagonal wooden units resembling the cane-work pattern of a Chinese hat.

Maffeis Engineering’s scope of work is related to the construction stage of the PTFE roof and timber structure: a full design of the entire architectural membrane supported by a complex wood structure, according with the load transferred from the membrane.
A very challenging design for this complex roof started from the beginning in cooperation with the architect, to define the final design of the fabric shape including detail typologies in every part of the roof.
