Wanda Metropolitano Stadium Completed
09.11.2017 | Atlético Madrid's new home
Taiyo Europe appointed Maffeis Engineering for final design of the covering and the cable net as part of the refurbishment of the new Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. The architectural concept was provided by Spanish architects Cruz y Ortiz together with Schlaich Bergmann und Partners.
Maffeis used its extensive stadium covering and facade design expertise to develop Value Engineering solutions, IFC, Shop and installation drawings.
The final design consisted of 96 PTFE panels (80000 sqm) supported on a steel framework. The panels were designed to mimic a large cloak which can adapt to different situations, such as converting from a football stadium to an athletics one.
The entire process of panel installation took four months and was completed in time to host the first soccer match in September 2017. In addition, the stadium will host the finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2019.
